So many people I knew had been living at Fort Benning for months before they even knew that this side of Columbus existed! If you're looking for a fun way to spend your weekend without driving 2 hours to Atlanta, check out Historic Columbus. There is a 10+ mile walking/biking trail that stretches all the way from post to downtown, and it has a lovely view of the Chatahoochee River. On Saturdays, there is a nice Farmers Market on Broadway for all of your local/organic grocery needs. For coffee, the local Fountain City is probably best, and they have a fun open-mic night on Thursdays. Due to its proximity to Columbus State University, there are plenty of bars on Broadway, but my personal favorite was The Loft. It was much classier and upscale than other options, and they had a really fun Jazz night on Saturdays! Food and drinks were both fantastic. For restaurants, my husband and I loved The Black Cow, which offered a modern touch on Southern Comfort food.

  • Recommendations: Renting in this area is probably pricier, so it certainly depends on your budget. Fancy new lofts were just remodeled and opened this year... I might have considered living there if it had been ready when we first moved to Columbus. If you can find something reasonably priced, I would definitely recommend living in this area! It's probably less than 15 minutes to get to base, and there are always so many fun activities going on.
