Our family loved Charleston for the surrounding activities available. Going downtown to The Market on King St. or to the Isle of Palm for the beautiful beach. Also the parks were amazing, one with a water park, giant play area, Wannamaker I think was the name of it.
The schools were not all that great but our kids loved going to school with mostly all military kids.

Charleston was nearby so we loved going downtown to the Market to walk around and window shop, or grab a bite at one of the local restaurants. We also loved that the beach was only about 45 minutes away. Plenty of shopping from the North Charleston mall to Mount Pleasant & downtown Charleston to Columbia (hour and a half drive). The neighborhoods were great for families with all ages of kids, we had BBQ's with neighbors and weekend gatherings w/ the wives to play cards, scrapbook or sell home based business products.
