Annandale: Off Base Area of Town

"east Annandale: convenience and community"

I have lived off and on in the far eastern edge of Annandale (a baseball throw from Falls Church), with my kids attending Falls Church schools, since 2004 (I transferred here three non-consecutive times for military jobs). This has proven to be the perfect spot. Inside the beltway makes the commute much shorter and simpler, as I always had three main routes to/from the Pentagon to chose from, depending on traffic, or what errand I needed to do on the way home. My commute was typically 20 min w/o traffic, 35 in peak traffic. There is an abundance of parks, with beautiful path for walking, jogging, bilking, etc. Wonderful area for kids! My neighborhood was so safe I never even locked my house...and eventually found out a couple of my neighbors didn't either!

  • Recommendations: This area is wonderful. There are numerous ethnic restaurants surrounding us - fabulous foods: Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, Peruvian, El Salvadorean, Mexican, Korean, and many others I haven't even tried. It is also very close (15-20 min) from pretty much anything you want to do: DC attractions, Tyson's, Pentagon/Crystal City, rec centers and athletic fields for various kids' sports...

We currently live in Annandale outside the beltway but next time I would live inside the Beltway. I found that living within the Beltway is much easier, but a little more costly, but then you have to way the cost of gas and parking for a longer commute. If you are cyclists, the living right near the Washington and Old Dominion Trail (W&OD Trail) is a great option. It is a straight shot to DC and much easier and often faster than commuting. http://www.wodfriends.org/trail.html

I recommend living in Annandale near Braddock Rd, or Backlick or Little River Turnpike is a good area. Any of these neighborhoods are near a bus line to the Pentagon.

  • Recommendations: I highly recommend neighborhoods along Braddock Rd in Fairfax. (Canterberry Woods, Red Fox Forrest, Kings Park, which all have great express bus service to Pentagon.
