Oak Harbor: Off Base Area of Town

Review

Getting stationed at Whidbey Island is very different from other places we've been stationed. There are lots of outdoor activities to enjoy and the weather is mild. The island is rustic and the nearest major shopping is about 2 hours away in Seattle and it's an hour drive off island to get to a Target or bigger name box stores. Traffic on Island is non-existent so that's nice.

  • Recommendations: Living on Whidbey Island takes some adjustment. The scenery is beautiful. There is lots to do outdoors like hiking, biking and boating. Winters are rainy but the summers here are amazing! I would say the area is best suited for retirees or families looking to get away from the bustle of the big city. Jobs are very hard to come by, major retail shopping is 2 hours away and there is very little entertainment for singles looking for a nightlife. The cost of buying a house here is expensive for what you get for your money. Not much traffic or crime and if you like a slower lifestlye with mom and pop shops you'll love Whidbey.

Oak Harbor is a 10 min commute to base, access to the commissary and exchange, and all the big box stores like Home Depot, Walmart that Anacortes doesn’t have. http://www.oakharbor.org/

Oak Harbor is a great location for those who have families, like the outdoors, and like the "slow life". Folks who prefer the city and being close to shopping, the interstate, various good restaurants, and nightlife will not be happy in Oak Harbor.The jobs are mostly non existant. I thoroughly enjoyed the people I met while living in this area, but I don't miss the lack of "things to do" (I am not an outdoorsy type and don't have children). If we were stationed at NAS Whidbey again, I would live in Anacortes (about a 30 min drive to base). It is much nicer, and only about 15-20 minutes from I-5 and shopping/restaurants.

Oak Harbor is an awesome place to live for those who love "small town" America. A short drive to the mountains or to Seattle. The summers here are amazing!! Tons of outdoor activities.
