New London Naval Submarine Base: Nautilus Park

This is pre-renovation, the neighborhood and homes are being renovated since we left. The bedrooms are decent size, but the bathroom is tiny. The laundry room is upstairs- which means complications if flooding occurs. Complications include the flooding water going through to your first floor via the smoke detectors causing them to go off- yes, it happened to us. The kitchen is large, but not a huge amount of storage and no pantry. Carport, not garages and a small storage shed behind the house. However, there is just enough space between the storage shed and the house for the screen door- which opens in a way to block walking to the car. So you have to close the door fully before walking- very annoying with bringing in groceries! Yards are large due to no fencing- they allow dogs but you are only supposed to take them out on a hand leash- not have them on an anchored leash. Lots of trees for shade. Also- no air conditioning. And the keys are electronic keys- not metal ones.

If you plan on moving into one of the base housing neighborhoods, know that you will be at the mercy of people who do their jobs poorly and lack communication skills, among other things at Balfour Beatty. We moved in 1 day before some friends (same rank, coming from the same place for SOAC) who had 1 child. They got a 4 bedroom. We had 2 kids and one on the way and they put us in a 3 bedroom just 6 houses down the street from our friends.

The lease has multiple typos, errors, and incorrect references. We corrected each item before signing. We were then told that we had to sign a lease without any of our noted corrections because theirs had been approved by Navy JAG or we couldn't get into our house. Shame on Navy JAG. With our household goods in the truck in the driveway we had no choice but to sign.

We discovered toxic plants (deadly nightshade) in the backyard and, after 3 months of calls to maintenance, never came to eradicate it. Mold was found during pack out.

Nautilus Park 2 is close to base and is fairly quiet. We have a garage (those homes not renovated have carports), lots of storage/closets, ample parking, and a big yard. Some of the other homes in the neighborhood have must shorting driveways, though. There are privacy fences in the back of each home. We have carpet upstairs in the bedrooms and hall and downstairs in the living room. The bathrooms and kitchen are tiled (not industrial tile), and our dining area and entryway have wood laminate. Our kitchen in large and has a dishwasher. We have 2 full bathrooms upstairs and a half bath downstairs. There are lots of windows to let in the sunlight. These units do not have central air, but there are A/C boxes installed in the wall for easy window A/C units installation. I've always had great experiences with maintenance needs being met quickly. I like pretty much every thing about this home and area. There are several tot lots/playgrounds within walking distance.
