West Ghent: Off Base Neighborhood/Subdivision

We lived in West Ghent when we moved to Hampton Roads. LOVED LOVED the neighborhood and our neighbors.

Some of the houses have older home/neighborhood problems. There were termites, opossums, and rats in our house at different times. Too bad our landlord didn't take care of the problems properly...

I was born and raised in Norfolk and there are definitely wonderful neighborhoods and sketchy neighborhoods! I would recommend living in Colonial Place, Ghent, West Ghent, anywhere near Jamestown Crescent or homes near Old Dominion that are on the water side of Hampton Blvd. These homes are probably more affordable for officers or higher ranking enlisted. Another good neighborhood and slightly cheaper is right across the street as well as behind Granby High School on Granby Street. These neighborhoods are very classy, schools are great, and you are in the heart of Norfolk.
When looking for homes/rentals, you may see a lot of nice looking homes on the internet that are in Ocean View. Unless the home is located in a neighborhood called Pinewell, I would be careful. The house may be nice and big, but Ocean View can be sketchy.

Ghent is a very pet friendly neighborhood. Many places keep bowls of water outside and have dog biscuits to give out. I always felt comfortable walking my dog alone at night. I taught in the local elementary school and would highly recommend it.
