I would not recommend anyone to rent a house on base. They dont take care of the homes. Half fix the things in the home and the management team are a bunch of jokes.

The housing is individual houses for everyone. They are smaller, but well kept and the housing office is accommodating. The area however, is not. There is a large amount of crime from the immigrant communities in Lompoc. There is a large presence of homeless people along the central coast. The school on base "teaches to the test" and the lunch attendants/playground attendants are atrocious. It is never really "sunny". The weather is rarely warmer than 70 degrees but when it is, you have no air conditioning and your home will be unbearable. The beach is nothing like you'd find in Pismo area or in SoCal and is closed often due to birds migrating. The fog will cover the beaches until 9-10am and be rolling back in by 3-4pm. Prisoners are everywhere on base. Expect to order everything online, pay 3x the prices for groceries and 2x the price for gas. The animosity between the space people vs. everyone else is nearly palpable. Live in Pismo and commute to keep your sanity.

- Recommendations: Most people will either live on base or in Vandenberg Village. If we moved back, I would elect to live in Pismo and commute. The gloom and the poor morale was enough to make everyone we know apply to any and every duty they could to leave there as soon as possible.
